Celebrating Philippine freshwaters

Greenpeace launches photo contest

Manila, September 2007--Greenpeace today launched a photo contest with the theme “Celebrating Philippine freshwaters and looking at the threats.” The contest aims to bring people together to celebrate and protect our important freshwater sources. Photographers and photography enthusiasts from all over the Philippines are invited to join this competition.

Greenpeace is looking for dramatic photographs that document why our country’s precious freshwater resources must be protected. Entrants may submit photos that celebrate the beauty of our rivers, streams, lakes, springs, groundwater reservoirs, etc, or which expose how these freshwater sources are threatened by pollution and waste, or scarcity and drought, thereby making access to clean water difficult.

All photographs must depict freshwater or freshwater sources in the Philippines and must have been taken by a Filipino or a Philippine resident between January 1 to September 28, 2007. Deadline for submission of entries is September 28, 2007.

At least 20 finalists will be chosen, and prizes of PHP30,000, PHP20,000, and PHP10,000 will be awarded to the first, second, and third prize winners respectively.

For more details please visit: www.greenpeace.org.ph/photocontest

Huwag Bumili ng Manila Standard

My aunt was once an OFW. She was employed as a cook of a Filipina and former Consul General of the Philippines in Hong Kong(Circa 1999 or a little earlier). Her pay was lesser than any OFW in HK. But that is not the sentiment of this post because I've long, with my mom, given up the attempt to bring "justice." She was, in anyway, not supportive of the effort.

PRESENTDAY Newsflash: Malu Fernandez is still employed after writing these?

I'm joining the boycott then...
Boycott Manila Standard Today

Strike! Boycott! Strike! Boycott!
Oh yeah! I've been waiting for too long to use that screaming lines from a Sepultura song. Just bringin' the HAPPY back.

The world is looking at my home. Here's an article I grabbed from Negros Island Online

The eastern part of the Negros Island known as the Oriental Negros was chosen as one of the best islands in the world to live on as featured by Islands Magazine in its July to August 2007 issue.

Islands were rated by its weather (Island called it the flip flop quotient, the number of days you can wear flip flops), number of expats, cost of housing, ease of migration and the price of the local beer.

Here is the score card of Oriental Negros.

Flip-Flop quotient: 3
Expat to locals: 1:1,000
Population of Main Town, Dumaguete: 102,265
Languages Spoken: English, Cebuano, Hiligaynon
Percent who speak English: 90
Get there from U.S.: via Manila, 70 minute flight to Dumaguete
